After much discussion, the British decided to dump their portion of the spoil into the sea. However, so as not to pollute the English Channel with chalk sediment, a gigantic seawall made of sheet metal and concrete had to be built to keep the chalk debris contained. Since the chunks of chalk was piled higher than sea level, the resulting land that was created totaled about 73 acres and was eventually called Samphire Hoe. Samphire Hoe was seeded with wildflowers and is now a recreation site.

The French Solution to Spoil
Unlike the British who were concerned about ruining the nearby Shakespeare Cliff, the French were able to take theiur portion of the spoil and dump it nearby, creating a new hill that was later landscaped.

When I was in high school, I had a history teacher pose the question “What did they do with all of the dirt from digging the Panama canal?”

We went on to convince one of our classmates that the island of Guam was built from all of the excavated dirt.

Samphire Hoe is indeed a very artificial bit of new coastline, but to be fair it adjoins the bit of cliff nearer Folkestone which was mass-dynamited to allow the railway line to be built, back in the dim and distant past. It’s already a pretty artificial few miles of coast, as a result.

When I was a kid and the tunnel was being built, the trains used to stop at a little tiny platform at the bottom of Shakespeare Cliff, to let workers off from the one carriage that lined up with it.
