  • Where did my speed come from ? Tyres or wheel size ?

    Hi crew,
Well I have just updated from a 26 inch cotic soul to a Soul 275. Had my 3rd ride on the new bike today and it’s just so much faster. Both bikes very similar spec but the new bike come with maxxis ardent tyres front and rear and my 26inch had spesh butch and Paraguay.
So where is the speed coming from ? The bigger wheels or the ardent tyres ?

As above, you probably pedalled harder and nailed every turn quicker than normal due to riding a new bike

What about all the other potential variables?

    Tailwinds?
    Weetabix consumption?
    Religious Faith?
    Pre-ride poo?
clichéd Stem-cap with words of encouragement?

How much faster? Higher average speed over a previous personal record?

Well I did push harder than ever. I got 15 PR’s out of 16 on my local ride but wheels just seem to roll better. It was also perfect condition too.

Weather conditions. Tyres may also be better suited for your trails.

Ardents do roll really nicely, the race version is a bit faster too 🙂

If it is down to the bike then the tyres as can’t see how 12.5mm of increased radius would make a dramatic difference.
I recently switched from 2.4/2/2 slighty knobby tyres to some 1.9 semi slick and I am going faster on the same routes in same conditions yet I am not in the shape I was a few months ago. In doing so I have probably reduced in tyres radius by almost the difference between 26 and 27 wheel size…

27.5 made you faster, now Imagine what 29ers will do 😯

I felt the same when I got my Soul 27.5. Bigger wheels make the difference, science innit.

Just gone from 2.25 to 2.4 on my bike, I’m faster due to the confidence this tyre gives me, so it’s not always going skinny that makes a difference.
