Is it possible to use another Cane Creek race or another make?

Standard steerer? I’ve probably got a spare somewhere, I’ll try and remember to have a dig tonight. CC are pretty interchangable though not completely- Hope also fit an S8 though the seal might not be quite right.

I’ve used Hope ones several times without issue. Also the lower S model races fit.

Do Crown races not come with the headset?

Or you could consider he’s bought a second hand frame with a headset fitted and the buyer hasn’t sent it to him.
