Tickets seem to be released about 13 weeks in advance, is there a rule of thumb as to when they are cheapest to buy?

13 weeks away they don’t seem nearly as cheap as I’ve got them in the past…

Split journeys, off peak, unpopular times etc.

I posted on here a while ago as I used to use trainline.com, but then realised going direct to the operator you pay no fees. I always buy in advance & never seen the price go down further.

Have you tried split tickets?

Generally, far in advance but play with times as well. Travelled to Dundee from London, £20-£40 difference in prices on same day. Was cheaper taking 1st class at 12 than 2nd class at 10.

Can’t really play with dates as it’s an event or booked times.

Unless it’s the Virgin XC or whatever it is then a sandwich and no drink, east coast mainline were tight on food and the drink wasn’t as free flowing as the west was 8 years ago either…
