What makes that smell you can smell when it first starts to rain after a long dry spell?

if you're in the middle of nature probably flowers opening up to accept moisture, if you're urban it will be all the micro bits of tyres and oil washing over the surface, hence why you should take your time in the wet after a dry spell..

I always assuned it was a combo of rain bringing particulates like pollen out of the atmosphere down to our level (reasonably sensible suggestion?) and also rain hitting ground/trees/plants etc and knocking particulates off them into the air (less sensible suggestion)?
