motorman - MemberI'm thinking of one day around Rothiemurchus/Inshriach/Feshie (I love it down that way, regardless of how many times I've been) but was also thinking up Moray Coast somewhere. A decent day ride would be ideal, with an idea of what sort of tide I should be looking at (so I can play the "when" bit!)
No problem, where you heading for?

Fell in love with the Salsa fatbike at the London bike show last month
Really wanted one, but couldn't justify it.....until a tough days riding in Swinley with 3" of snow earlier today
Surely this is reason enough to buy one??
They look utterly ace!!!

Can you afford to buy one without having to sell the wife and kids?
If so what more justification do you need.

I would be looking at Burghead to Findhorn, or culbin sands for a day trip.
Burghead to Findhorn is a good option at low tide for a good beach run to Finhorn, fill up on Coffee/cake, then you have the option to return via the dunes & forest. Can make a day out of it if the pace is easy going.
Lossiemouth would make a good base for the day, then take East beach in morning & West beach in afternoon.
Culbin is worth going if you take a days supplies with you, as there is nowt there. Work your way through the forest until you drop onto the beach & flats, then ride till the sun sets! Really needs to be planned around low tide, as the is some fantastic riding, but some parts do get cut off when the tide comes in (quickly) which results in a long detour along the sand bar.
It is a great place & well worth a visit

No wife or kids to sell - but £1.5K for a bike i'll use twice a year is very extravagant!!
The sensible person in me says build a nice 120mm travel bike fro local trails, but the biker in me says that i need a Fatty

believe me once you've gone fat there's no going back.
they are great fun whatever trails your onPosted 3 months ago # -
Hmmm, reading the Salsa website...
"Want your Mukluk 3 to be more than one bike? Turn it into a 29er mountain bike with a switch in wheel set. The frame is front-suspension compatible as well."
So could justify it by also getting a 29er - 2 bikes for the price of one (everyone tells me that they're great, but not sure yet)
Becoming more tempting

Seroiusly. After you've had a few rides on a fatbike it's all you'll want to ride.
They're not fast but by **** they're good fun.I think people classing them as a bike that you can only ride in snow is the biggest mistake that people that have never tried one make.
You wouldn't believe the kind of rocky techy trails you can climb on these things. If you can keep pedlin you'll get up it.

If your life doesn't revolve around going as fast as possible on groomed trails, then a fatbike is a brilliant option. Smell the flowers, enjoy the view.

There's no way I'd have bought and built a Fatbike just for the occasional snowy day.

Epi do you always have to polarise this? A fat bike does not replace a std mtb for anyone bar you!
And while my fatbike (if I ever get it working again) is for all the riding stu suggests, I'll not be selling all my other off road bikes just yet thanks - try cornering at 20+mph at <10psi for starters.

Epi do you always have to polarise this?...Was I? - not intentionally. Sorry - I like all sorts of bikes.
Actually I'll be very interested to hear your thoughts on your bike as a 29er and a comparison to it as a fat because it will be as direct a comparison as possible of like for like in terms of bike geometry etc (apart from the wheels).
If I seem enthusiastic it's because I like to take my bike off the tracks and my mtbs weren't so good for that. Not everyone needs a race weapon which seems to be the trend in mtb marketing these days.. Sort of RSF rather than XC mindset.

I'm actually thinking of running 26" wheels on it...would sort the bb height issues
Thing is I can't even experiment without building a wheelset, offset rear and Maverick front.Posted 3 months ago # -
The awesome riding weather continues
Fatbikes are not the solution for all riding conditions by a long way, but they can do some things very well
Posted 3 months ago # -
Narrowmindedly didn't look at this til today.
Motorman ! I'm sure I shouldn't like that. But, I do...A lot.

I chose the right week for my weeks holiday, nothing to do but cruise on the coast
Mud free and just an airline clean and relube of Squirt each evening, yesterdays ride i tried to film the float of the new Moonie, at the start of the film look at the footprints, then the tyre prints, loads of float
lovin this bike, harder work on tarmac than the pugsley (expected) but unreal on real soft sand and dunes...Posted 3 months ago # -
So, you lot run less than 10psi, right? What happens if you run say 20 or 25?
Posted 3 months ago # -
No one's ever tried....you're knackered after 8psi TBH.
Posted 3 months ago # -
LOL Al
I usually ride at 8 psi on 3.7" and 6 psi on 4.7" on the beach,
I put 25 psi in my pugsley to ride the 10 miles west on the road to the coast once when the car was off the road. I bunny hopped a kerb and clipped it and the rebound nearly spat me off
Caught the ERC chain gang one night east of Drem and stuck behind for about 200 yards
they were all looking up from my tyre drone

That's strange Bruce. The only drone I associate you with is your voice......
