Well I had no idea that Tariq Aziz had been put on trial. After all the years in which he had been held without trial, I had come to believe that it would never happen. It seems to have been all was very hush-hush. Which is a shame, because I was really looking forward to it.
I don’t reckon anyone in Iraq knows more about American complicity in propping up the Saddam Hussein regime, including supplying it with chemical weapons to kill iraqis, than the fluent english-speaking former iraqi foreign minister. I was hoping that he would sing like a canary once in the witness box.
Still, I guess that he would never have been given the chance. And probably the reason why the trial appears to have been very quietly heard, and in a somewhat secretive way.
