I’m currently doing a Midas course on minibus driving with a local authority. I’ll be transporting elderly people & people with ALL manner of disabilities.
Today we were shown how to ‘safely’ put a wheelchair bound user person onto the bus & secure both chair & passenger with the passenger in the chair.
It’s like the bloody Krypton factor!

Can’t wait to do my 1st run & scare the crap out all my passengers! 😉

Just put the brakes on and tell them to hold tight and scream if they want to go faster

We stopped doing that years ago as it was deemed unsafe.

Just remember the seatbelt extensions are not to be referred to as ‘fat straps’, especially if shouted out by apprentice from one minibus to another, in front of line of chubby teacher and kids service users.

    🙂
    Yep, it’s a nightmare.

Rochdale’s taxi drivers have it down to a fine art, never had an issue with them.

I’m usually fine with the winch, front straps, rear straps and belt, but did once forget to close the rear doors properly on the company van.
I do wish people wouldn’t scream so loudly.
    😀

Attaching the metal belt clamps to the floor runners can be a bit hit and miss, much patience and usually some swearing required there.

    Good luck.
Sounds like a great job, your customers should be a lot nicer than your previous lot.

    Go on.
    All advice much appreciated.
We’ve just ordered a new van after a bit of a fiasco with the previous one.
Can’t post on here or I might get into trouble but will pm you if you don’t mind?

    You have a commode?

    Loctite.
    Seriously.

Everything designed for people with mobility issues seems to be designed by the blind, made of cheese and carries a ludicrous price tag.

What, securing a person in a wheelchair in a minibus was deemed unsafe?
Please elaborate, I’ll put it to the guy doing the training.

And line the tray with lots of bog roll.
Makes emptying it much less messy.

Various regulations can’t recall them all now.

We still use wheelchairs in minibuses. Needs proper floor clamps and so on. All Edinburgh taxis also use them
