I saw this thing at low tide at the weekend. I thought it might possibly be a WWII bomb (they occasionally get washed up on the Essex coast) and reported it to the police who in turn got the bomb squad to have a look at it.

They said it was ‘not an explosive device’ and I felt a bit silly. However, I still don’t know what it is. Any ideas?

No idea – but I would have done exactly the same.

Did they take it away anyway so no one else phones them up?

My guess (if it’s not a bomb), towed sonar? Or a weather station/bouy that’s come adrift.

I don’t have any other photos I’m afraid. They did take it away.

My bet is it’s some sort of submarine/ship deployed sonar bouy.

No need to feel silly – what you did was perfectly sensible.
