  • What's the real difference between XX1 and X01 cassettes?

I know one is black and one is silver but there appears to be bigger all difference in price or weight.

I’ve heard some suggestion that the 42 on X01 is steel but some say not, and given the weight difference, it seems unlikely.

Does one wear better than the other? Resist corrosion better? Smell better?

X01 looks shit in no time because the anodising wears off. XX1 for me. 42t is alu on both.

    Both are all alloy.
    Both are anodised
    One is black, one isn’t..

Both cassettes are 11 > 2 Steel, 1 Alu. Both are basically the same. The difference is the surface treatment. The X01 is Black Oxide 11>2 and anodised 1 cog. XX1 I believe is plated with something else to make it wear better and shift smoother… like the top end chains.

Humm, hardly seems worth the “savings” of x01 once you’re in that deep. Cheers all.

Yes sorry, not anodised as they’re steel. Same point though – X01 ones look dreadful in no time. There’s only a few pounds in it anyway.

you can replace a worn out 42t cog on the xx1 but you cant on the x01.. The x01 also wears faster than the xx1..

What if the xx1 was £200 and the x01 was £150?

Not much difference, I’ve got the pinned version which is a significant saving and only a little bit heavier (about 100g lighter than XT)

Looks like there’s no difference at all…
