I’m just watching black hawk down again & it occurred to me that decent post Vietnam war films are hard to come by.
    Any recommendations or opinions?

    Cheers.

    Apocalypse Now.
    Full Metal Jacket.
    Das Boot.

    Three crackers there.
Could argue for Four Lions too.

I was thinking the other day there is a growing collection of decent ‘war on terror’ films:

    The Reluctant Fundamentalist
    Zero Dark Thirty
    Lone Survivor
    Hurt Locker
    Syriana
    The Kingdom
    Green Zone

All made after the start of the Vietnam war. 🙂

    Tumbledown was excellent too.

    Enjoyed Valkyrie despite TH.
Cross of Iron, Inglorious Basterds and Downfall were brilliant as well.

Do you mean made/produced after Vietnam, or made after and not about Vietnam??

If the former, I’d say Apocalypse Now and Platoon would be up there with a damned good shot. If the latter, then Three Kings is good and Saving Private Ryan sneaks in by default.

Would you count Generation Kill as a film?

Dresden, the German language one, is well worth a watch too.

    Killing Fields was brilliant.
    Enjoyed Attonement.

Surely he means films about wars that happened “post Vietnam” ?

In which case most of the suggestions don’t fit.

I haven’t seen any of them, but there are a few Russian-language films about the Chechen war which are probably pretty gruelling.

Anyone seen Prisoner of the Mountains?

I assume the OP means based on an event post vietnam?

    I would say:

    Black Hawk Down
    Hurt Locker is good

trying to remember what Rules of Engagement and Courage Under Fire were like.

Oh and Buffalo Soldiers 😀 (Cold War I guess as they are not at war)

    Hurt Locker
    Zero Dark Thirty

Whatever you do, do NOT be tempted to watch “The Patrol” film about brits in Afg. One of the worst films I’ve ever seen, certainly the very worst ending of any film ever. Complete tripe.

We’ll i do indeed mean films about wars post Vietnam, but lots of the above are very good films, Route Irish included.
Oh & no one has mentioned Tears Of The Sun yet 💡
    Cheers.

Three Kings and Zero Dark Thirty get the thumbs up for me. The latter had me gripped for the entire film. Iron Sky too….its kind of a war film but regardless its great!

Not a film as such, but the BBC drama Warriors – about the UNPROFOR operations in Bosnia.

On reflection, Waltz with Bashir is probably my absolute favourite.

    Waltz With Bashir

Was going to say this too. Being a young kid in the 80s I can vaguely remember stuff being on the news about Lebanon but never really knew what went on. I do now, and predictably, it was beyond horrendous.

Also thought “The Green Zone” and “The Kingdom” were pretty good.

If you’re not wedded to the film format, Generation Kill?

(Warning: I am just about to show Top Secret! to my teenage children, so read into that my appreciation of the moving image.)

    Four Lions.
At first I laughed until I was crying then the ending. Well, just watch it.
Especially poignant movie with the current Eastern situation.

I watched Four Lions before I went out to Afghanistan and, to this day, greet my former boss out there with “Salaam our kid”.

4 Lions is funny. The ending is darkly funny. Reminds me of the terrorist sketches in Monkey Dust.
    Another vote for 3 Kings.
