The window sill is the worst. I've dug the worst of the rotten wood out and need to fill some big gaps. Plan to treat the block built man cave wood work to a lick of paint to see it through winter/s.

sound timber sound good
I used ronseal 'purple cap' stuff, worked fine, sandable.
You could, get some dowelling, and a drill bit the same size and then use good wood to mount the dowelling to form a skeleton that you can build on, but to be fair I've seen people fill in using paper and chicken wire mesh, so that might be quicker............

expanding foam,spray a mist of water on it as it sets, it'll stop it expanding so much and therefore be more dense - job done!

Expanding foam as a back fill. Allow to set. Then some two-part filler eg Timbafill. Fill to just underneath. Allow to set. Then fill proud. Sand flat using a block sander. Tidy up with a bit more filler. Allow to set. Then fine detail filling.

Decent filler, the stuff that you mix the 2 parts isn't cheap, but then you'll forget the cost when the fumes get you, I love the smell of it, like the P40 car filler. I'd use wood.

When using these high density fillers you need to cut back to sound timber then treat it with a wood hardener (essentially a clear resin) around the area where the timber and filler adjoin. As the timber and filler expand and contract at different rates you'll soon get cracks opening up if you dont.

Two part car body filler. Sounds like you need a lot & you should be able to get it at a better price in a big tin from a motor factor than buying the same thing in a pack that says 'wood filler' on it. If the holes are huge you may like to use a bit of timber with brown parcel tape on to form the shape, should come off easy enough once the stuff has set....I think it was the brown parcel tape. Good luck, I'd have replaced the rotten timber.

I did a windowsill with caulk and it worked well.
Reading on the tube it said to fill big holes with paper. That sounds proper bodgy to me Posted 9 months ago # -
I was recommended 'Miliput' epoxy putty. It's the consistency of plasticine. You mix equal measures of two types of putty for 5 mins and then it's ready for use. once you have it in place you can shape and smooth it with water. You can chisel it and it sands well too. I've been using it to fix holes in a sash window and was impressed.

The Dulux Trade Weathershield system is what I use. Gouge out all the soft stuff, apply 2 coats of preservative primer, apply wood hardener and then Isopon or Plastic Padding car body filler (2-part) unless it's easier to put another piece of wood over the top. Then undercoat and top coat as usual.
