  • What's out there like a salsa El mariachi?

Hello I’m looking for something steel, 29er, SS-able but ideally with the kind of fancy alternator drop-outs found on the salsa. I don’t really want to run track- ends. What else should I be looking at?
    Cheers

I’m not a huge fan of EBB’s but love the Salsa dropout design too…

If you can look past the steel requirement then Santa Cruz Highball has the same style dropout/ tensioner and build up to a great bike.

Here’s my 19lb SS (not great light this Winter to get a decent pic sorry!)

I think its gone 650b now, but there was recently a 29″ kona explosif with 44mm headtube and slidng dropouts that was well nice. A mate had one in raw laquered steel finish.

What I’ll be looking for in my next bike when the current frame goes. Surly have some obvious contenders – I might even wave two fingers at the bike industry and just swap my existing 26″ components over onto a Troll.

Also might be worth looking over this list posted a week or two back.

    Surly Karate Monkey?

But to be honest I’d buy a Kona Unit from the above. They are about 700 for the whole bike these days.

Main feature of the El Mar for me is the steep angles, that was what I wanted. A lot of other bikes are quite a bit slacker.

In typical STW fashion I’d recommend an El Mar as that’s what I have.

It’s a great bike, and gets good reviews.

    Rides, err, like a bike.

’15 Sml/ Med Lime Elmar’s £380 for the frame here.

On one inbred and some chain tugs.

TBH since tubeless pretty much eliminated the risk of punctures I’d not worry about track ends any more.

Might be selling my large El-Mariachi soon-ish, not desperate, but 2 f***ing years without a pay rise is taking a toll on my bank balance and some of the n+1 bikes will have to give.

Will take a certain amount of +size too.

I’m going to be selling my medium 2012 el mariachi 2 as my knee is too goosed for SS now 🙁

Does anyone know the seatpost diameter for the latest Kona Unit?
