It used to be that there’d be loads of bargains in the Classifieds, and you’d have a few people snapping up things on the day that your posts go up.

Now it’s slim pickings, no bargains, and stuff I now try to sell seems to get no interest at all.

Is it the general market that’s not doing too well? Are people just on holiday?

I have to say I find them hard to sift through and most of the time look for online discounts and buy new, £70 for a pair of brand new Deore brakes why bother with second hand and possible issues ?

The STW ones in particular used to be really quick, stuff sold before it hit the bottom of the page, and was generaly cheap and fairly stereotypicaly STW stuff (king headsets, hope brakes, XT/XTR) and for failry fixed prices (there were so many king headsets for the standard £50 you could pick a colour!). Now most of the sellers seem to just be people from mtbr/pinkbike/bike radar posting adds of low/mid range kit with limited descriptions and no pics for high prices.

As a seller it now takes 5 re-posts, numerous time wasters and then someone complaining that the 2nd hand bit you sold them had a scratch on it that wasn’t highlighted in the photos.

It used to be more of a small bunch flogging spare/unwanted kit for cheap among internet mates so to speak, which is why there were so many bargains.

It’s now evolved into its own little 2nd hand trading forum which means sellers are expecting max money for their kit and buyers are consequently being more choosey.

If you price accordingly stuff sells quickly, it you want eBay money for it then sell on eBay!

Some of the best value kit is from the local jumbles now, silly low prices for some things!

In my opinion it went downhill when it was split into 2 forums. Just seemed more of a faff to keep an eye on 2 tabs.

Received some very speedy replies when I recently advertised a chainset. Considering it wasn’t XTR, there was plenty of interest. 🙂

ST for sale is not the easiest site to navigate, prefer the buy/sell on pinkbike or the search on ebay (just got a new ccdb – lush!)
I agree though prices have got high recently and not the great place to get unwanted kit for a good price from a like-minded mtber that it used to be, but still are some friendly bargains…

I’ve noticed a lot of the same ‘hawkers’ that seem to hoover up any bargains within minutes.

Heh – I can see an easy way you could fix both of these issues in one blow..

Plenty of bargains to be had. If I’m after something I’ll always make sure I search replies to wanted ads going back 3 months as often people will have stuff they’ll sell but don’t list it in the for sale section.

The search function is a bit of a faff but it doesn’t miss much as long as you are specific about what you are searching for.

The couple of things I’m selling at the moment are a bit specific, and dropping the price isn’t really an option – as they’re good value for money and a bargain for the right person.

Just seems like there’s now less interest overall in the For Sale and WTD section.

Back in the day, even though it was messy – the one Classifields for all worked realy well at generating a good community of swapping and selling.

If an item is priced well it’ll sell. There is often a big difference between what a seller thinks his item is worth and what other people will pay for it.

Just convince Lynton he needs a womans 29er!! 😆 He’s bought pretty much everything else off you!!

After that Pinkbike – Out of the 10 lots i sold recently, the bulk went via interest from Pinkbike.

I got a nice/lovely Hope pro 3 team green hub laced to a DT Swiss rim for a steal last week!
Today’s offerings look good as well.

Sold loads on here, never managed to sell a single thing on pinkbike.

I’ve sold three items in the past week or two just because they came in on conversations on this forum. I bet I could properly clear the shed if I actually got to advertising stuff.

I posted something similar recently but I still found STW was the fastest way of selling most things. I was advertising my stuff on 5 facebook MTB pages, Pinkbike, Ride It Out and here. Ride It Out (Previously Southerndownhill) used to be very busy but has slowed down to nothing. Sign of the only just cheaper to buy new times.

Saying that, if its cheap enough itll go quick enough.

i don’t sell as postage costs mean it’s not worth it.
I don’t buy as too many classified only posters make it too risky.

That “right person” seems a bit hard to find. Maybe they’re on holiday?

Well, I’m selling frames. Not cheap, but as very good prices. £650 for a 2011 DW-link Turner Sultan in near perfect condition isn’t a bad price at all.

You just need to fit the bike, want 29er wheels, and like the idea of a Turner.

The Salsa I’m selling, I’ll probably break down and sell – but it’s a shame as it’s setup as a really nice fast bike for a bit of everything, just a bit steep for the golfy and Inners.

I don’t post in the for sale section anymore, just wait for a wtd ad or something in the main forum indicating interest.

Doesn’t make for quick sales, but reduces the number of timewasters.

I find there are just a few too many traders now, rather than genuine enthusiastic cyclists who want to move old stuff, to make way for new shiny.
I sold a frame last week put the forks in the box with it, they’re no use to me anymore and karma is always good

I’ve sold everything I have listed but agree with earlier post some parts etc are so heavily discounted from new by on line retailers I think u have to take this into consideration when selling something second hand. I think the only caveat to this is if its niche/high end/in demand etc but generic it’s sometimes better value to buy new with a warranty.

Bought a pair of bargain-cheap (well, I thought so anyway) Lyriks from the classifieds a few weeks ago. Got a newer better set before I could fit them, so put them back up for the same bargain price I paid – not a sniff.

Put them on Pinkbike at the same time – seven people saying they’ll take them for the asking price and the first responder is collecting them on Saturday. Go figure.

Luck of the draw…some on here, some on pinkbike. At least on here you don’t get numpties offering curlywurlies or porn mags in part exchange!!

And think £650 is a good deal. How long has it been on the market?

I sometimes check things out to see if there any bargains. What I tend to find is people offering used brakes for a fiver less than the new price on Merlin or CRC. I know what I’d rather buy.

Having said that for frames and bikes there’s a few decent bits to be had. Someone selling a retro Marin full susser yesterday for £20 collected!

I’ve bought and sold loads of stuff over the years – enough to build the 4 bikes in the garage and I’m about to start looking for bits for my daughters first MTB.

On the whole, I’ve found it easier to find parts in nicer condition on STW than ebay…although I did get my fingers burnt with one STW transaction that took some persistence and help from fellow STW users to sort out.

Pinkbike’s system is very useable.

I get a lot more interest from buyers on there too.

One thing I’ve noticed the last few months is lots more timewasting from not-buyers both here and on PB.

Will be glad when my clear out is done. I’m sure it will be one day.

I think the appeal of the STW pages was impulse buying of bargains rather than the more structured ‘shopping’ on ebay, and the WTD adds were oppertunistic but if people aren’t seeing them then a WTD add for some specific hard to get spare part that’s in someones spares box isn’t going to be seen.

I was selling something on the For Sale.
A guy had posted saying he wanted them a few hours later. Then again 3 hours later, demanding to know why I hadn’t contacted him yet…..

Separate FS and WTD works better for me.
