Mine likes to get what she asks for a always writes list whereas I don't see the imagination in that and prefere to give experiences like a weekend away.
This year though I'm getting her a Kindle as the amount of useable space in the house is being reduced up by all the chic lit books she read but won't get rid of. I have a feeling it she wont like it though as she prefers real books and using half our luggage allowance when on holiday for them

I'm with her on this one. I just love the smell of books! I love nothing more than buying piles of books. I have lots that I haven't even read yet. I like to pick and choose 5 to take on holiday with me. For a week.

Or how about some nice Chanel beauty products? They do some lovely moisturisers which I'm always reluctant to buy for myself - they seem a bit indulgent (plus there's always bike stuff I need more), but would love to receive them as a gift.

What about a luxury cashmere pashmina? Go careful on the colour though - make sure you play it safe, and think about the predominant colour in her wardrobe. Soft pink, grey, black are always good options.

Does she do smart work attire? I have a really nice leather case - an alternative "bag for life". Of course if you really wanted to splash out then you can't go wrong with Mulberry...

For something a bit cheaper - something nice from The White Company. Even if it's a pair of slippers or a nice bathrobe - anything purchased from there is to die for IMO. The candles make nice stocking fillers.

getting money in a card means you can't ever be disappointed and then you can have a bit of shopping blitz in the sales .

Giving money is just not the right spirit, IMO. It changes the nature of the occasion. It's like - suppose you go to dinner at a friends house and at the end you stand up and say "That was a great meal. So great that I'm giving you ten quid", and you get out your wallet.

An exaggeration, of course, but just to illustrate the point that money messes up social stuff. YMMV.

Each year I end up getting Mrs stayhigh some Chanel perfume & Clinique make up she likes but doesnt buy herself as its expensive. I'm thinking of getting a perfume collection box or 2 this year as well as she says she'd like some different fragrances but doesnt know what she likes.

Anyone recomend a good perfume/makeup site rather then House of Fraser?

There will also be some little things like a nice wooly scarf and/or pashmina, some bright, stripey longsocks, a pair of leather driving gloves, an mp3 player with nice earphones and maybe something else if I can stretch to it.

Mrs Fo got a nice handbag and matching purse last year. She loved them. A luxuary dressing gown and matching slippers has gone down well previously. HTH

TBH, what I think Mrs North wants is a car. Specifically a VW Beetle (current model).

Which I think is asking a bit much, given that this year I've bought her a house....

(Actually, I think she'd like it if I did buy her a car. Just feeling rather skint after buying the house...)

I once bought my wife an ironing board cover for christmas. Not the whole ironing board, there was nothing wrong with the one she had, apart from the cover being a bit tatty.

She's now my ex-wife, I'm still not sure where it went wrong.

I hit a result with Mrs O's birthday last week, I was in a panic the lunchtime before but then went into a bike shop. One Rockshox Reverb seatpost later, result.

Seems to have gone down well, but waiting to see if it comes back up again just as well.

I've also discovered that applying reverse logic, and buying a woman a power drill for Christmas doesn't make them happy either

I've also bought my wife a soup making machine, she'll love that.

The trick is to make sure you include a variety of presents for ladies. It's no good just buying them a hammer drill. They might really want one (and what girl wouldn't?) but they want something romantic and girly as well usually.

So also make sure you buy something that makes them feel special while they're putting those shelves up.
