You know, to hold stuff in the garage

    Looking at this:

I know it’s not the fancy pants expensive one, but for what I need it’ll do, and it’s blue……so, there’s that

Record are supposed to be good I believe.

There’s an old thread here if it’s any help? I doubt vice technology has moved on a vast amount in five years.

I would recommend trying to find an old Record vice on ebay local to you. They last forever. Due to their weight, collection only is your best bet, hence the local search.

You can either leave it in well used rustic condition or give it a fresh repaint.

The new ones are made in China and are not as good quality as the old ones according to my research a while back when I was getting one.

Yep that’s a good record vice used them in the workshop & still have a few at home, get soft jaws for it too though or get them surface ground.
They were about £40 when I bought them ( 4″ jaws) & took a fair amount of abuse on the ‘heavy duty/dirty bench’

eBay search for old Record vices, as above. Make sure it’s mechanically and physically sound, no damaged threads or cracked castings, paint finish is irrelevant, either leave it well-worn, or get a heavy-duty wire brush on a whizz-wheel and clean it off and repaint with Hammerite flat blue.

I think you can fire a cannon at a proper Record vice and it would go “yeah, so what”. The new Irwin Record vices can be very expensive but they aren’t a patch on the original ones.

Can I be the first to say “coke” obviously followed by “hookers”?

FWIW my vice came with the
workbench
. It’s been sturdy enough.

i would recommend one which can swivel, unless you have a particularly spacious workshop?
