This isn’t a stealth ad, I’m trying to figure out what to do with my Blur LTc frame. I stripped it down a few months back and built up a Spitfire. When I tried to sell it someone asked if it had the pivot dis-bonding issue. I’d never heard of this issue, but on closer inspection it looks to be suffering the start of it on a couple of pivots. I hadn’t noticed an issue riding it before stripping it down, it was as solid and brilliant handling as ever.

Its more than 5 years old so is out of the extended warranty period that Santa Cruz offered for the problem.

Does anyone have any ideas on what to do with it? Or is it destined for the scrapheap?

Shouldn’t it be possible to just get them re-bonded? There’s a few carbon repair specialists around, I’m sure one of them could do it.

There will be ways to repair it but the cost probably wouldn’t be worth it on a 5 year old bike.

Contact SC and see if they can offer any help. Sounds like a fairly well known issue. You never know.

If not, sell as spares or repairs on ebay & and honest description. I’ve some some forks with marked stanchions for pretty good money that way.

Are you 100% sure this is the issue?

I had a similar problem with my old nomad, it looks like the pivots were dis-bonding so I took it into Stif Cycles, one of the techs had a look at it and said despite it looking very similar to the dis-bonding issues, it was just the paint flecking having changed the bearings.

Get it checked out by a SC dealer before writing it off, you may find out they do it under warranty anyway as its a known problem. That was the case with mine as we discussed warranty whilst the frame was being checked over.

I bought a carbon Covert for my son just days before your ad went up… if I hadn’t he would have been riding your bike now.

No help but I guess what I am saying is it is a great frame and you were after a fair price…. I would have taken the punt….

TBH… if I didn’t already have too many bikes already, I’d have snapped that frame up (for around £275 😉 ) and simply ridden it. I suspect the ‘disbonding’ issue may simply be a surface paint-based cracking issue. For £250-275 I’d take a risk on that, for £300, less so..

If the thing did actually show signs of failing, I’m sure I could have a go at fixing it with some form of permanent bonding stuff. It might then fail, it might not.

I’m sure there’ll be someone out there who would think along similar lines.

Jungle recommended a carbon repair firm but couldn’t come up with anything else, which I didn’t expect anyway. I’ll throw in a long off-piste FoD guided ride for you and your riding buddies…. 😉

Just out of interest is it the pivots inserts on the front triangle or rear triangle which look to be de-bonding?

I’ve got a Blur LTc frame which has been sat in a cupboard for a year with impact damage on the down tube and ‘de-bonding’ on the front triangle pivot inserts, but a perfectly useable rear triangle.

Isn’t Hora after a Blur LTC these days?
