So I’ve got this pair of wheels. Hope XC on Mavic XC717.
They were my main MTB wheels until about 4 years ago or so when I built some more on DT hubs with a 15mm front. At which point I fitted them to my touring-spec Inbred. I always knew a 717 was marginal for touring but they did over 1000 heavily (I mean very heavy) laden miles before the rear rim cracked at every drive side spoke hole. So I built some more touring wheels, XM321s on XT. Again, I know I was chancing it on an aluminium axle, hence the XTs
Now, I’ve sold stuff before and regretted it, so I kept hold of them. The front is fine and the hubs had new SKS bearings and pawls in them 300 miles ago.
I was then thinking of building some 700c disc wheels for my CDF out of them but I’ve gone all Dynamo hub mad on the front of that now and I’m not splitting the pair of hopes up.
So not the Genesis, or the Inbred (also dynamo now too). My Saracen has DT240s and a 15mm front, my Pitch a 20mm front and an XC rear hub anyway and they won’t fit the fat bike. That’s all my bikes counted out. Mrs PP has a Trek Madone….. No discs. Her Ridgeback is centrelock and her Kona has Pro 2s
Now Pro 2s are crap, but these have recently been refurbished (again…..) and they don’t get used much anyway.
How long can I hang onto them before I have to do something with them….?
It’s a dilemma for sure. 😉

Give them me knowing they will be well used for the rest of there life…. Well thought I’d try at least as I like the xc hubs

I am similarly conflicted with some additional parts stashed away in the garage. Having stripped my old ti hardtail down to the frame, I’ve ended up keeping a set of SIDs and a set of Pro2 hubbed wheels “just in case” I ever get round to rebuilding it.

I too have a XC/717 comobination pair (anodised blue, mmm) hanging around in the garage. I keep wondering what to do with them, but I keep coming back to binning the rims (I’ve definetely had my money’s worth out of them) and selling the hubs to a retro fetishist.

Im still using a Hope XC rear, it must be 10 years old now. The only parts that are original are the shell, the axle, axle spacers and the end caps.
I managed to find a new ratchet ring a couple of years ago and have replaced the bearings twice and the freehub body once.
I’ve even got a spare mint hubshell in red (with ratchet ring) so I’ll be sticking with XCs for a while yet!

Exactly same set of wheels here – probably will be stripped and hubs used for rebuilding onto 29er rims for my Longitude. The current 717s are the third set of rims to go on the XC hubs. Also have an original pair of 6bolt BULB hubs with wonky rims…. just keep working, unlike the Pro2s which go through bearings for fun.

Just built my hope XC front up with a stans 340 for use on the cx commuter, rear still going on the SS. If anyone has any XCs they want rid of I may be interested…

My problem is what to do with the red middleburn hub, currently laced to a 717 but I have no rim braked mtbs anymore. New road wheel? Build it up with a teeny rim to bling my kids bike?

Older Hope hubs just seem to keep on going. I have an XC rear/Bulb 20mm front combo on my DMR Bolt, and see no reason to change them ever!

On a related note I have some Middleburn disc hubs built onto 717s in the shed that I keep thinking I might sell, but they’re so nice to look at!

Have a pair of really innapropriate ex729s on Hope XC, can’t think I’ll ever use them again having gone to 15mm front – could get the front rebuilt onto a new hub I guess, but meh…..

I have some old 717 rims and some alex rims (off a stumpjumper fsr) in the garage. I even have a specialised stout front hub (9mm) bolt through.

Thing is with the price of postage they are not worth posting. Most of my bikes are now 29er and 15mm. But they are in good condition so I’m reluctant to throw them away.

My box of bits grows ever larger occasionally I can lend a hand as I have bits that people need or can canabalise a half working mech for a friend who needs a B screw and jockey wheel.

Bike jumbles never seem worth it.

Was thinking of getting them rebuilt for my croix de fer – not sure whether to attempt my first wheel build or get a local mechanic (like Petty Poddy!) to do it.

I have front Hope XC hub in black laced to a DT rim which I used for the first time for the 10 under the ben event years ago. Finished the ride with a badly banjoed wheel and complained to CRC who built it. They refused warranty (1st ride) and I ended up buying a new Hope Pro with wider rim to replace it at LBS.

That bent rim and practically brand new hub are still in my garage loft somewhere. Worth anything??

If you have retro XC wheels it seems sensible to find something like an old Kona, Klein or Cannondale frame and build a single speed pub/shops bike.
If it makes you feel better I still use XC/Bulbs on 521 CD rims on my main bike, the Bulb and rims are around 15 years old but just won’t break and if it ain’t broke…..

One rim is cracked. I can easily build new wheels on the hubs should I wish though. I just don’t need to.
But one day I might. And I know Hope XCs are the best hub they ever made, lots tougher than the newer models, and you can’t get them any more. I don’t need the money so selling them would be silly.

They’re just good, tough, and virtually infinitely repairable. A full set of bearings, top quality ones is only £22 for instance and that should last 6-7 years. I’ve just put new bearings and pawls in them too. Rather use these than newer ones.

I have two sets in the loft, one all silver with Ti hub, they will make a fine retro build one day*

*Well they are currently attached to a Ti Pipedream with RC31’s & middleburn RS7’s with Hope original mini brakes, I may use it again one day

I can see, around the room, a pair of Hope Ti-glide/suspension on Mavic 217, XT M780 on 317, LX M550 on 138 and Xtr M900/Pace RC-50 on 217 Ceramics (although these are attached to a very pretty Vitamin t2). All 26″ rim brake (and mostly ancient). My current bike’s a 29er with discs! I doubt I’ll ever use any of them again, but, you never know, so they’re staying. 😆
