It was fantastic yesterday to watch Sir Bradley of Wiggins officially win the Pedal-Around-Frenchland, but who in the name of all that’s holy decided on booking Lesley Garrett to sing the national anthem ?!??!

Wrapped up in a union flag like some novelty tourist tat.

She absolutely murdered it – sounded like she was giving birth. It’s generally a horrible anthem, but it doesn’t usually sound too bad at sporting events IMHO. Maybe not a song for a soprano?

Thankfully I was watching it not quite live on my Sky Box – i had been recording it while watching the GP and after fast forwarding all the ads I was about 5 minutes behind live. Cue some rapid fast forwarding as soon as dear old lesley let rip.

Two bars was more than enough for me!

It was like a bad joke, just really jarring- no need for her to be there at all, it sounded terrible, and she looked ridiculous. If they really, really, really need to do the national anthem they should just have a recording like they do in F1.
That sort of thing should go back to the Superbowl or wherever it came from.
