Have a rubber downtube protector just received from charlie the bikemonger ( top bloke btw). Now it was originally on a Horsethief carbon but need to remove the adhesive backing before refitting it so I need:

    1. To remove the old adhesive, and

    2. Best method of sticking it to an alloy frame

Is the glue on bare metal or a painted/lacquered surface?

If it’s bare metal, nail varnish remover (acetone) will probably shift it the quickest.

If it’s on a painted surface, try heat and/or WD40 and scrape it off with your nail.

Sorry perhaps poor explanation on my part, just need to remove old adhesive from the rubber downtube protector and then reapply the downtube to a clean alloy frame.

WD40/white spirit/pertrol/meths – try a few; one of them will work well for removing the sticky stuff.

something like this to restick it http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3M-x-20MM-AUTO-ACRYLIC-FOAM-DOUBLE-SIDED-ATTACHMENT-ADHESIVE-TAPE-UK-SELLER-/181700778986

Cheers anyone know of a liquid adhesive as opposed to a tape?

I’d probably go with the tape; won’t damage the rubber or your paint work.
