Going there for four days in April to mark Mrs Gti’s birthday. I like engineering, history, bikes, good architecture, quirky people, good beer and interesting food.

Obviously she’s got her list which includes all the usual stuff, Empire State Building, Ground Zero, Statue of Liberty, etc. etc. so where should we go that’s off the towerist trail?

Central Park Zoo if you do zoos. MOMA. Guggenheim.

USS Intrepid, One World Trade Center & 9/11 Memorial, Grand Central Terminal. Central Park.

Empire State has big queues even if you’re pre-booked, so the current advice is to go to Top Of The Rock (Rockefeller Center) instead – that way you also get to see the Empire State Building.

Make good use of the subway system, it’s pretty cheap and goes mostly everywhere. Walking across Manhattan can be a bit of a stop-start affair as you generally have to stop for traffic every block.

I’ve heard the queues for immigration at JFK can be horrendous; I flew into Newark and it was a case of “what queues “

Not wanting to be rude, but this comes up about every eight weeks, and all the replies are pretty consistent.

Just had 2 days there over Christmas. Most has already been mentioned but I enjoyed seeing grand central station and then walk out and right outside is the chrysler building. Go into the lobby also!

Foodie highlight for me was getting dim sum in China town from a really authentic place. Mostly Chinese people eating there, no menu, trolleys of strange and wonderful items going around the tables. Cheapest meal we had also. Joy Luck Palace but before 1pm is best.

I found Ellis Island fascinating, ferry passes statue of liberty too.

We did the Empire State Building pretty late, no queues to speak off.

Toy shop with the big piano from “Big”.

If you like social history the Tenement Museum is worth a visit. Also the Frick Collection and the Merchant’s House Museum.

An NHL game at either MSG or The Barclays Centre, season finishes early April but The Rangers could make the playoffs so it depends on when your’e there.

Edit: make sure you do your esta.normally the esta que is a nightmare although I was fortunate I walk straight up to a both when I landed really do thing it’s pot luck I landed on a Thursday even.
