   My next door neighbour has decided to upgrade his 1 ride old 2010 XT gearing to XTR. He keeps on calling it my 'project' and wants me to fit it all.....

   Usually I would be happy to spend a couple of hours tinkering with a bike (and have done for friends in the past no problem) but (to give some background).....

   He bought the bike off me originally (Blur LTc) as one day when I was washing, it he decided he wanted it. He then proceeded to try some of my other bikes and decided he wanted my Ti roadbike too (until I talked him out of it as he was about 4 inch too tall and 4 stone too heavy) Since buying the bike 3 months ago it has been ridden once. He recently went in to a local bike shop and decided he wanted an £8k roadbike to compliment his LTc (as they are the same colour!)

   So, in this situation, would you? fit for free and have a warm feeling inside that you've done a good deed or should there be an element of reward for the work that is to be completed?

   I like tinkering with bikes so I'd probably do it for nowt - of course if you could get the virtually unused XT bits for pennies or free then that would be a bonus.

   I suggest taking the XT stuff off and 'accidentally' leaving it in your bits draw!

   At the very least he sounds like a good source of cheap, hardly used high-end parts.

   tbh people who have expensive bikes and dont really use them do annoy me as it is a waste of a bike. As he is a rich and foolish why not charge him an extortionate fee or tell him you can only do XT stuff as XTR needs to be installed professionally

   Don't be annoyed at people like this, they keep the bike industry afloat! Agreed it's a waste but that's his choice/loss.

   Agreed, part of it the fact that it is not getting used and my frustration is that i've explained that for someone who will maybe use the bike a couple of times a year the extra expense of upgrading to XTR is not worth it. Also the fact that it will prob take me longer to fit it that he will spend riding it overt the next year!

   Deffo didnt - Gave him it for 'mates rates' as i thought he would get good use out of it as he was on a health kick.

   Do it, then buy it off him for about 50P when he needs to buy his mid life crisis porsche.

   He has already done this - A new Triumph Rocket without a bike license ticks that box. Porsche box has been ticked too.
