    WHAT RIMS!?

for my new commuter tourer project.

Disk brakes, so no need for a braking surface.

ideally, i would like Mavic 717s in 700cc!
    do they exist?
32h, as going onto hope bulbs.

will be taking 700×32″ tyres MAX, so no need for weird wide ones.
i no nothing about road wheels.
will road rims break due to disk braking forces?
    narrow 29er rims maybe better?

Mavic Open Pros are just the ticket, I find.

I run Open Pros on my disk-braked tourer/commuter. I went for 36H though – just for a bit of extra strength when loaded. I believe Mavic rate them up to 28mm, but it seems many are going beyond that. Open Sports would be the next “largest” in the Mavic range.

You can also get Mavic A719s. A bit heavier, but will easily take that sort of tyre.

If you don’t want a braking surface, then why not get some bling?

    Am really pleased with these:

I have Mavic XM79 rims on the commuter. They are heavy duty touring rims, but essentially the same as the MTB version, just a bit bigger!

They have a braking surface, but obviously you don’t have to use it. I’ve used them on and off-road for several tens of thousands of miles with not a single problem.

Only downside is you wont fit a tyre much narrower than a 28c.

Open pro if you can afford them – light (425gm IIRC), strong, good value, versatility to fit narrow tyres.

Mind you those Halos’ look good value and it seems you can get light-ish rims (<500gm) like open sports quite a bit cheaper.

i reckon red halos would look amazing, however no eyelets….

resurrecting this thread as I’m looking to build up some road wheels for my 29er that are more road tyre-friendly than my Arch’s. Any more suggestions? No breaking surface required, and should I be worried about rim strength as I’m using a 200mm front disc? Cheers.
