I'll have a similar decision in month or so.
I've been running a 1.6 bluemotion Golf for a week or two and I've been very impressed - great for long distances as well as nippy when you want it to be. Does around 60mpg on a motorway run if you keep it at 70. Boots a bit small though.
Prior to that I had a Skoda rapid for a couple of months which was horrible in comparison - just felt tacky and 'normal'. However it had a bigger boot and was a bit better on the fuel with between 70-80mpg.
A colleague has a Alfa Romeo Guilietta which I would personally stay away from - lovely looking but not very good mpg and is uncomfortable and feels quite hard.
