  • What Lego set for my lad and me?

Every year my lad and me get a Lego set to build together over Christmas. We’ve done the monster that is the Unimog, the VW Camper, several smaller Technic sets, but I can’t find something that piques my interest this year. Don’t want to spend GT3 money either…

Bucket wheel excavator is pretty cool. Make sure you’ve plenty of space for it as it’s a bit of a monster!

Might be tight for Chrimbo but,

Talking of Star Wars – I was in the Leeds Lego store at the weekend. £399.99 for a Death Star.

    Christ on a bike.

I like the bike, but could be tight yes. I would have gone into the new Leicester Sq shop a week ago but it was queued and entry controlled. Couldn’t be bothered waiting.

I reckon the Claas will do the trick.

We’ve (I’ve) gone for the technic heavy lift helicopter, having done big red pickup truck and blue dragster thing the last 2 years. Hope it’s going to be good, quite a bit more than we’ve spent before (£75).

As always…technic is not proper Lego!

Slave 1 is all kinds of awesome.

I had that Claas on the shortlist as it looks like a solid piece of kit. However, the vehicle itself is push along. This put me off having seen a vid of it being fully motorised – which got me very excited – and I now assume was a custom build.

The Mercedes Arocs is a highly recommended at IRO £150.

I got the Mercedes above last Christmas for my son (well, for me really). We did a bag of bits each, still took a day or so, and it’s pretty impressive. The problem is finding somewhere to keep it.

Have all the recent big technical sets. The class tractor is good but I got bored of it pretty soon in the build. If you have loads of spare parts you could design your own attachments which is fun.

The bucket wheel excavator is interesting to build and huge which has appeal. Definitely recommend it.

My recent favourite has been the crawler crane though, a good well designed set. And also like the Volvo wheeled excavator.

The Mercedes Arcos was also a good build.

Would say get the BWE, crawler crane, or Arcos. Obviously big price difference so with crawler I would also recommend the volvo as an additional.

One of the lads (7yo) I teach brought this in to show the class https://shop.lego.com/en-GB/Volvo-EW160E-42053?CMP=KAC-SAHCSEU8&HQS=42053.

Great kit and an impressive build all by himself.

My nephew is only just 4, and I’ve got him properly into lego now, though Technic is probably a bit beyond him yet.

I’ve already bought him a telescope for xmas, but couldn’t not get any lego, so he’s got this coming too: http://www.tesco.com/direct/lego-city-airport-cargo-plane-60101/507-3501.prd?skuId=507-3501&pageLevel=sku&sc_cmp=ppc_sh-_-sh-_-tesco-_-507-3501&gclid=CIL2mea15NACFRITGwod4B8NIA&gclsrc=aw.ds&source=others Was a baragin at £12 in ASDA

Should keep us (me) busy for an hour I hope. Good thing for my OCD tendencies is it’s not a 3 in 1 set as once built he demolishes them within hours to build one of the other things, then at some point it all ends up as a pile of bits……….

He’s built a convincing quad bike, ride on lawn mower, and an ice scraper (actually looked like a back to front zamboni) all from memory/imagination and a pile of random bits this week. 😀
