  • What landmarks tell you "you're home"?

I guess I might be lucky with where I live but whenever I go away from home for a few days/holiday etc there’s always one view that tells me I’m nearly home…
Got me thinking, what do you guys have (landmarks etc) to let you know you’re nearly there?

Living in a flat, featureless landscape, it’s probably this.

Like Rich Penny:Stonehenge. As I drive west past it, I suddenly feel I’ve crossed a hidden boundary and am back in the South West.

Heading south after coming off the A30 at Whiddon Down there is a great view of East Dartmoor (Kes Tor, Meldon etc) which opens up as the road drops down into the Teign valley. Always a genuine heart in mouth moment after I’ve been away.

If coming from down south, the RAC building at the M6 / M5 interchange, coming from north, Forton Services.

The mast on Winter Hill from the M6 / M62 lets me know I’m back in the North West.

Heading down the A3 as you hit the bottom just over the brow of the bridge as the road merges with the M27, all that appears before you and your eyes is Langstone Harbour in full beauty.

    Then I’m home,

When the kids were young there was always the “are we home yet?” question.
So we developed their recognition of landmarks and ended up with water towers being the key feature of knowing how far it was to go. The kids took ownership of them by giving them names. We still refer to them like this 20 years later .

From the south Angel of The North. When they built it that was their claim and I had my doubts but once the nearby trees matured it is dramatic as you come around the corner to see it.

The rain. Doesn’t matter where you’re coming from, once you hit the Basque Country it’s raining.
