The Thing, no question, the absolute pinnacle of horror films, Alien is also great but more sci fi than horror.

Great choices, the Hitcher and The Thing.
I rate Near Dark up there with those.
    Also The Exorcist
I did like Blair Witch Project, but not something I've bothered watching since the first time.

+1 for American Werewolf. Although it's more of a comedy IMO
+1 for Salem's Lot as well.

Anyone else find The Exorcist really disappointing and not scary?

I love The House on Haunted Hill (I'm a bit of a Vincent Price fan)

The Orphanage is great, as is Devil's Backbone.

Not really horror, but the Silence of The Lambs films are fantastic.

    Evil dead 1 2 and 3
Blair witch + space cake, oh the memories.
Arachnophobia as I turn into a girl when there are spiders around.
    Friday 13th
And most of the eighties ones. There were some proper classics around. I think I have forgotten most of them.

Is The Thing the one where the alien creature keeps transfering from one body to another? and another creature is chasing it? or is that another Carpenter film?

Have to agree on The Hitcher.

If you want a horror that is so bad it is good try Monster Man.

Dark Night of the Scarecrow the 80's version, not the 1995 "night of the scarecrow".

This scared the shit out of me when I was a kid!!

Another vote for The Hitcher because there is nothing supernatural about it that requires suspension of disbelief.

Also, Last House on the Left and I Spit on Your Grave.

    Old but mighty good, Nosfuratu.
I like loads of the above mentioned too, Salem's Lot, Texas Chainsaw.

all mine have been said above.

    The thing
    Event horizon
The Blair witch (first time i saw it i thought it was sh*t but then the second time it just stuck in your head and creeps you out)

Wolf Creek – another head wrecker, not all out blood n guts but sticks in your head

Salems lot – my cousin was 17 and put this on for me (i was 11) telling me it was a film about lost kids. I sat through it crying, he wouldnt make me lave the room, i had nightmares for years after!

The Ring – the only horror film that has made me reeeeeeally jump, the bit where she comes out the TV!!

28 Days later – another classic, the little bits that freak you out, london streets empty and he motorway blocked off, they way it was shot was great.
