Turner guy you are just the man…..

Got a 2011 Turner flux, and having front mech issues.

want to run a 2 x 9 set up with sram XX chainset up front, but with 39-26.

Turner are saying I need a top pull bottom swing mech to accomodate the smaller chainrings and get the correct mounting on the frame (due to the welds), but unsure of which model numbers, they are saying go Xt or XTR. Any advice?

Was looking at the Shimano XTR M971?

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=15187

but think that is for 3 x 9 if it makes any differnce?

or would the the top pull, top swing XTR M985 work? or not with the smaller chainrings?

    Do you have a flux running 2 x 10?

I have the XTR M971 mech but run 40/27 (middleburn) up front on the Flux, and 9 speed 11-34 on the back, with XTR shifters.

I did the mod on the front mech as Turner suggest.

I had to shutdown the adjustment screws on the front mech so I could only index 2 positions on my 3 position front shifter, which was (only) a little fiddly.

I don’t change the front ring too much, so I don’t tax the front shifting too much as I regard it as two ranges of 9 and change to the appropriate range according to the terrain.

Changing on the front ring is worth about 2 cogs on the back so changing at the back is nearly always preferable anyway.

Works well for me and I like the 40/27 and won’t return to a triple, although the middleburn system means that it is easy to swap between single, double, and triple on the same cranks if needed.

Do you think I have given myself headaches by going 39-26 on the front and should have gone for the 42-28?

I think what Turner are saying is that to run the 39-26 i need to run a bottom swing (& top pull) mech to reach the smaller cogs. If i had gone for 42-28 then a top swing (& top pull) mech would have worked.

Still not convinced that the mech wont hit the frame under full compression though.

I may send the 39-26 back or cancel the order and go for 42-28. What do you reckon?

39-26 is only one tooth different than mine at 40-27, so the band will be a little lower on the seattube – I think it should work with the modded XTR M971.

I would go with that mech, or they also list an SRAM mech on the faq page:

    http://www.turnerbikes.com/all-turner-faqs/turner-flux-faqs

and I assume you have seen the mod page:

There may be discussion on the mtbr turner forum about 2×10 mechs as well.

Yeah I have got one of those SRAM X9 mechs at home, it arrived this morning, so not had time to fully investigate yet.

if you google it it gives http://www.bikepedia.com/pa/Item.aspx?itemid=770944

Which i am pretty sure is this one in top pull: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=13259

hence why I first asked what the diff between a 9 speed and 10 speed front mech is, is there any difference?

So do you think i will be fine with that mech and a 39 26? i still have time to cancel the 39-26 chainset.

I have emailed silverfish, but they said it would be a few days before they could get back to me.

should think it will be ok – there might be some difference in plate sizes I suppose.

the difference between the 39/26 and and the 42/28 will be in how high the band is on the seattube.

A 2 speed specific mech will cope with shifting larger jump in ring size. eg shifting from 22T -> 38T

ive just fitted this x9 mech but I havnt got the chainset to check. The swing arm of the mech come within about 10mm of the rear tyre, is that right? What are your clearances like Turner guy?

Also is you XTR mech double specific? think I may send he sram back and get an XTR and modify it.

Also do you think the 2 x 10 xtr M986 would work? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=54889

do you think the 2 x 10 xtr M986 would work?

probably as it looks the same design. If you are going to stick to a double then that might be a better idea as you know that the limiter screws will cover the range correctly.

    What are your clearances like

    Fine.

I think your clearance will be more than that once you have the cable attached and everything adjusted – the mech cage will be over the inner ring remember, so how far will the inner ring be out from the tyre?

SRAM x9 went back and I went for the 986, got it from on one/planet X fairly cheap. Should get it today, hacksaw will be out tonight.

problem with the X9 mech was that the cable bolt on the mech faced backwards and you couldnt get an allen key in to tighten it.

The M971 and the 986, the bolt faces outwards so they dont have this issue.

is modifying the mech easy? always nervous when taking a hacksaw to anything!!!

In preparation for my first trip to the Alps. I recently converted to a 2×10 set up – the day before i travelled (yes, i know i’m a dick )

My local shop didn’t have any 2 ring mechs so i stuck with the 3 ring mech

Its an E type, so i lowered it as much as i could but there was a fair amount of clearnace between the top plate and the big ring

I dropped the chain on every descent for two days – even using a chainstay located tensioner

The chain kept jumping out betweent he mech and the ring

This forced me to go 1×10 whilst in the Alps – no mean feat on a 38 tooth ring and very expensive to buy a E13 chain guide in the Mountains!

Upon my return, I got hold of my 2 ring mech the other day and the difference in size is very noticeable. The plates are much shorter and the mech sits much lower on the frame, thus closer to the ring

I’ve not ridden it in anger yet, but i’m sure it will be much better

    I managed it!

The turner pdf has pictures, so make sure you follow their instructions.

But it is non-critical, just hacking the arm off so it doesn’t interfere with the suspension.
