Ours has suddenly taken to running off on walks and not coming back on command after 3.5 years of being obedient. He is a bit of a mix and so it may just be the sight hound element emerging; fox, squirrel, rabbit or deer and he is off.

I grew up in the country, so beating them until they feared for their lives was standard practice. It does work, but you might need to see a professional trainer if you prefer less old-fashioned methods.

Reward based treats for us. Ours choose to be a knob about a similar age.

Pocket full of treats, every time you mention its name it gets a treat, on walks while healing say its name and give it a treat. When it does come back, yep, hoff it in the slats. Oh no, more treats, that’s it, treats.
