Past a Best before date = it might not be as good as it should be.

Past a Use by date = it could well be minging! (Eggs are a use by date)

EU law – dam stoopid, and egg is obvious when it’s gone off! Strangely I think wine is one of the few food items that doesn’t need a daft date stuck on it.

Best Before is only advisory, a retailer can legally continue to sell the item long after (as long as they mark it as past it’s bb). So, you won’t have any probs consuming it a long time after.
Sell By and Use By dating is different and used on more perishable goods.
