[*]I’ve got a mini spot/desk lamp (the kind that clips onto a shelf and has a bendy neck) that currently has a 40W reflector bulb with a mini-screw fitting, looks similar to http://www.amazon.co.uk/REFLECTOR-LIGHT-PEARL-SMALL-SCREW/dp/B002I47TSC

Can I just bung in an slightly brighter energy-saving bulb (that doesn’t have a reflective back), or will that cause kittens to die and the world to end?

I’ve not yet found a high wattage energy saving spot that is any good, and they’re still sold as energy saving technology can’t yet do spot lights.
