Check out the hospital records and drum n bass arena podcasts, those are both good places to start and to get a feel for what you like. If you want to go darker than those have a look at barcode recordings podcast, it’s rather ace but very dark/glitchy

I prefer it from my time – 93-2001 ish for me, new stuff is good, but I prefer what I know

    Really love my Raga Jungle.

Danny Byrd on The Essential Mix – can be downloaded if you look for it, is excellent.

I had his first album, dirty noises, not as good to listen to these days though.

THe drummer from Napalm Death made a decent album as well.

Bukum is ok to listen to but rubbish to go see at a club.

    Some from my vinyl collection

This is a pretty excellent mix if you can get your hands on it

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dungeonmaster’s_Guide%5DDieselboy – Dungeon Masters Guide

If you can get your hands on the Nightlife mixes by Andy C then those are also excellent, very dancefloor tunes.

Anyone who has been into d&b for a few years should also check out this badboy – past 2 present, 75 tracks in 5 minutes…some bring back some memories!:

There’s an ace NiT GriT re-mix of DJ shadow’s building steam… on the Remix Project.

The sound quality is crap on that vid but the whole thing is on free download here: http://djshadow.com/news/free-download-dj-shadow-remix-project.

Personally, I prefer ye olde jungle from about ’93-95, the kind of stuff that grew out of darker rave tunes (see above) – basically, anything that sounds like a mad collision of synths, samples and (most crucially) breaks that resemble a drum kit falling down the stairs. Hearing tunes from back then over a big system still makes me rather emotional…

I also loved what was sometimes called, erm, ‘atmospheric drum n’ bass’. First heard this played by John Peel – lovely use of the Star Wars sample:

    And an old LTJ favourite:

    True dat.

    I do miss it all.

I’ve been out a few times in the last couple of years and really enjoyed it but felt old. Shy FX was fantastic, played loads of tunes from my dnb years. Even got off my nutt a couple of times, including work nights out, when nobody knew.

I listened to Brown Paper Bag today – forgot how good it is.

The original Metalheadz label album is still a good listen….most of it was too mellow to be played at the parties i went to from 94-98 when i really liked D&B….the obvious exception being ‘Pulp Fiction’ by Alex Reece….best B&B track ever.

Club tracks from that era that just had to be danced to….Bad Ass by Aphrodite & MIckey Finn…..Super Sharp Shooter….Helicopter Tune….Origin Unknown – Valley of Shadows…..The Lighter….Shy FX – Wolf….

….so many good tracks, i still happily stick on a D&B mix in the car much to the annoyance of my girlfriend!

    Not even close….try 1969!

The D&B break that 99% of tracks are based around comes from a 6 second drum section of a track called Amen Brother in 1969….hence the description of ‘Amen breaks’ when somebody (usually a producer or DJ) is trying to describe a track.

    Listen from 55 secs in.

    lol.. fair enough
I’m an Amen geek too.. 😀

that Amen Break documentary on the radio was a bit depressing though, the guy that played drums on that track never recieved a penny in royalties although the break has been sampled possibly thousands of times for D+B, hip-hop etc

he died homeless and destitute 🙁

that only explains the beat though.. which incidentally was noticed when analysed to conform to the golden ratio also known as the divine proportion..

Yeah, you’d think a lawyer somewhere would’ve been all over that….i find it a little bit mad that a whole music genre built up around a sampled 5 second drum loop from 1969.

    yunki
    Free Member

It’s probably linked to that golden ratio.. you can be sure they didn’t know what they had stumbled across when he innocently played that break that day in the studio..

although since then the only surviving member of the band bangs on about giving the beat back to his tribal ancestors
