    My wife works for a lady who has a shop. Although she is a nice lady, do not think she really knows what she’s doing. I think she is a sole trader. From what I can tell, she needs to:

    – Pay employer’s NI on my wife’s salary (there’s no lower threshold for this is there?)
    – Have employer’s liability insurance
    – Have public liability insurance for the shop
    – Product liability insurance for the stuff she makes
    – Tell HMRC she is a sole trader

    .. anything else?

    There’s a lower limit as per hmrc website c£156pw below which both pay zero percent class 1 nic.

    Presumably there’s some potential H&S issues toe boot if she is a shoe shop though sheel possibly not last long enough to bovver.
