  • What do you call your 'wife' if you aren't married?

I’ve been with my partner for 15 years now – ‘girlfriend’ doesn’t seem to cut it really although that is the term I mostly use. ‘Partner’ seems a bit ****. Shall I just call her my wife? Or shall we get married to avoid this situation?

Depends, sometimes partner sometimes wife because it’s simpler for simple folk to understand.

we use Partner, but both think it sounds ****… depending on who we’re talking to we often refer to each other as husband and wife.

Well she’s your common law wife (even if that has no legal status).

Don’t do partner please. For years I thought the guy upstairs from me was gay, as he introduced me to his partner when he gave me a lift along the road one time. He meant his business partner. Even seeing him on the stairs all over a woman didn’t help, I just thought, “wow, he/she is very convincing !!”

I have struggled with this as I’ve got older girlfriend is just wrong and partner sounds like I’m gay (not that I am you know, nor am homophobic, if I was gay I’d tell… oh **** it).

The Spanish use mujer for wife, mujer also translates to woman. I would say thet if it’s not your wife, it’s simply woman. Works for me.
