  • What Cyclocross wheelset should I get?

Building up a cyclocross/commuter hybrid type of a bike and wondering what wheelset I should get, I have about £100 budget can maybe go a bit higher. Just wondered if anyone has any ideas on what I should get as I’m new to the whole cyclocross world.

Handbult Shimano (105?) hubs on Mavic Open Pro (or Sport) should be within range-ish.

I started out with a set of Shimano RS10s

They’re pretty light for the price, and the rims are very stiff and strong (much stiffer than the Open Pros that replaced them). The downside is the low spoke count, lack of user-tweakability and the eye-watering cost of spare spokes.

If you’re planning on building up more of an all-round CX bike for touring and commuting, a more conventional set of wheels would be the way to go, but if I was just racing I’d get these. Mine eventually had to be retired after using them for laden off-road touring, but in fairness that’s not what they’re for.

I had no end of trouble with rs-10’s with breaking spokes. As mentioned, spoke and nipple replacements are silly money.

Planet X A57 would be ideal – conventional spoking, a decent quantity of spokes for strength

Hi, I’ve ridden with Mavic Aksiums for the last few years, with the bladed spokes. Been very happy with them.

I have been looking at the Askiums, they seem to be the stand out one for me at the moment. On another note, this is where it goes a bit of a mish mash of parts. I’m running full XT at the moment, can I just swop all those parts over? I know they will fit the frame I’m thinking of getting (Cotic roadrat) but will the cassette and rear mech work ok with the askium wheelset or do I need to purchase a road specific cassette?

I’d go PX as well if £100 is the cap, can you get Open Pro’s + 105 for that??

i think the cassette depends on what hub you have on the wheel.

If you can get open pro’s on 105 hubs for £100 then please let me know where.
despite being a fan of Planet X and On one i really don’t rate their wheels, i’d be looking at Fulcrum racing 7’s, just over budget and not that light but pretty solid.
