  • What components arnt transfferable from frame to frame ?

Am looking to build a hardtail using a on one inbred frame and rigid forks.

I don’t have any parts other then frame and forks.

Just wanted to know if i buy another cheap bike from eBay and use the parts from there, what parts might not be compatible to transfer over due to sizing etc ?

Think work out cheaper this way then buying parts separately.

Also does anyone use Bikeradar forums, have you been able to log on ??

Front mech, seatpost, seat collar are the main things. But you might have trouble with headsets, cables being too short/long, hub sizes and bbs.

The most obvious parts that mayn’t fit are seatpost and front mech, seatpost may be able to be shimmed if the difference is small, most front mechs can have spacers fitted to adjust for tube size.
Other less obvious things to look for:
    length of brake hose
cabling – split Vs full run outers
headset/forks – plenty of different sizes out there now
that’s all I can think of for now….

oh, and BR forum is being refurbished so is read only for now

Headsets are so cheap, and can be so tough to get out, that I’d leave them in. Anything else I’d give a go. Choose the right donor bike (match seat tube diameter in particular) and you could be fine…

Lots of things aren’t cheap either, bear in mind it’ll probably be more expensive than you planned originally. Just waiting for someone to say they built a titanium full susser for 2 quid and a packet of peanuts.

the only components i wouldn’t transfer are cables.

the front mech should be fine if it is reasonably recent, assuming you have the shims they ship with.
seat post seem to be a couple of standards emerging so you MAY be ok.
Then there is the stem, the diameter will almost certainly be ok, the length might be an issue depending o how fussy you are.
Bottom brackets if you run HT2 are fine as one size fits all with shims.
Brakes, watch for post mount and IS disc caliper mounts.
forks, some forks will be too long or too short, diameter should be ok as long as you make sure there is no taper or 1.5″ headset.

I’d say headset and bottom bracket, unless they’re good ones and you’re bothered to transfer them.
