Personally, I wouldn’t go changing my pedals and shoes before doing something like that – you want to be comfortable and confident IMO, so wear what you normally wear to ride.

My thinking too. I have however called them and they did say that flats would be better.

Plan so far is to borrow some flat pedals and try them with my Campers (they have a flat sole). And bring my usual pedals & shoes with me in a bag on the day.
