Posted 2 years ago # -
I'll be buggered if I know
Posted 2 years ago # -
do you mean what chain of shops is due to go next to NEXT?
Possibly Aldi or maybe M&S
Posted 2 years ago # -
I suggest there are commas missing, and it's Next.
I'd lose a kidney for it to be Tesco though.

crap ones, like the ones which have gone so far. Primark would be good.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Focus.
Been circling the plughole for a while now...

Evans
Fingers crossed.

Primark is doing very well like most budget chains. Greggs is another doing very well.

and the Sun and Daily Mail are popular newspapers. Sad isn't it?Posted 2 years ago # -
Some local branches that never seem to have any customers and been on the news for financial pressures-
JJB Sports
Allied Carpets
Blacks / MilletsOtherwise there's a simple test - if X didnt exist would you start it up and would it be successful?
My "no chance" list would be:
WH Smith (competing with supermarkets)
H Samuel (cheap tat at high prices)
Homebase (sell cushions or is it plants or is it kitchens or is it nuts + bolts or just a little of everything? Lost their direction vs b+q)
Staples (vs Viking direct etc)
Flight Centre (vs the web)
Phones 4 U (vs everyone)
Blockbuster (vs lovefilm and parking attendants)
Ann Summers (dunno what they do wrong but no one ever seems to be in the store)

Can someone remind me what WH Smith does other than sell shit celeb biographies at xmas and act as a magazine library for bored spouses on a Saturday afternoon?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Greggs - 58p sausage roll is enough to keep them alive nom etc
Posted 2 years ago # -
to be fair gregs on chiswick hi street is right next to wh smith and i go to gregs to get a saturday mornin sausage roll and then browse the bike mags in whsmith while the missus looks in girly shops

Gregg's, Primark, Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, Subway, McDonald's et al are not going anywhere - not a chance.
There were rumours for ages that Debenhams were majorly in the shit but they appear to still be around.

Personally I cant see Clintons cards seeing the year out. Rumour has it they're on the ropes.

Flight Centre (vs the web)
Flight Centre'll be fine... people have been predicting the end of the travel agent for a long time, but we're still here
there's always a place for a skilled professional to help with the complicated stuff, and Flight Centre are one of the best around.

daveatextremistsdotcouk. You got no chance of Evans going mate, they're owned by Philip Green who's portfolio includes Top Man, Top Shop, Dorothy perkins and BHS to name but a few!
Posted 2 years ago # -
So in essence - anybody who solely sells something that the supermarkets also stock plenty of.
WHSmith have such a stronghold on train stations/airports that I imagine must make them a packet.

i've long wondered about Clintons. They are pretty big retail locations with huge ranges of tacky cards that i can't believe they sell many of. And then tacky balloons / soft toys / hearts to hang up in the back of your pinked up Saxo......
I can only surmise their margins must be good (cards are f'in expensive for what they are after all?)

Bu99er. (only joking anyway)
What every High Street needs is a bike megastore with the entire range of Wiggle and CRC (but with everything in stock) put together under one roof the size of a B&Q.

The only company making a big money out of prime spots at airports / stations is the Freehold owner - when you buy you Frappachino at £5 a cup, £4 goes in rent....

Isn't the Evans that he owns a chain of clothes shops, rather than cycle shops?

I think Blacks had their best Chrstmas ever this year so little chance of them going down at the moment.
Posted 2 years ago # -
So are we just going to end up with Tesco and Amazon?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Can someone remind me what WH Smith does....
Take over post office franchises ??

I used to work for Homebase and unless Home Retail (the group they're in) have a major change they'll be fine. They are quite cash rich as unlike some of the retailers who have gone bust recently they don't fund expansion with big debts. Some of the older stores are a bit cack now but the newest stores are good places to go. They don't try to compete with b and q, more home enhancement than core diy.

Dreams
Oh I wish service is one of the worst I have ever had to deal with.
Tamworth store last year when it opened.
DFS takes the biscuit for never ending sales.Posted 2 years ago # -
The large retailers currently struggling with credit insurance are Debenhams, Currys, Focus, Poundstretcher and TJ Hughes (not sure who they are). If you're struggling to get credit, then your auditors have expressed doubt about your business future and you're really looking to your investors/suppliers/bank to keep the faith in the current climate.
