My "no chance" list would be:
WH Smith (competing with supermarkets)
H Samuel (cheap tat at high prices)
Homebase (sell cushions or is it plants or is it kitchens or is it nuts + bolts or just a little of everything? Lost their direction vs b+q)
Staples (vs Viking direct etc)
Flight Centre (vs the web)
Phones 4 U (vs everyone)
Blockbuster (vs lovefilm and parking attendants)
Ann Summers (dunno what they do wrong but no one ever seems to be in the store)

to be fair gregs on chiswick hi street is right next to wh smith and i go to gregs to get a saturday mornin sausage roll and then browse the bike mags in whsmith while the missus looks in girly shops

So in essence - anybody who solely sells something that the supermarkets also stock plenty of.
WHSmith have such a stronghold on train stations/airports that I imagine must make them a packet.

i've long wondered about Clintons. They are pretty big retail locations with huge ranges of tacky cards that i can't believe they sell many of. And then tacky balloons / soft toys / hearts to hang up in the back of your pinked up Saxo......
I can only surmise their margins must be good (cards are f'in expensive for what they are after all?)

I used to work for Homebase and unless Home Retail (the group they're in) have a major change they'll be fine. They are quite cash rich as unlike some of the retailers who have gone bust recently they don't fund expansion with big debts. Some of the older stores are a bit cack now but the newest stores are good places to go. They don't try to compete with b and q, more home enhancement than core diy.

The large retailers currently struggling with credit insurance are Debenhams, Currys, Focus, Poundstretcher and TJ Hughes (not sure who they are). If you're struggling to get credit, then your auditors have expressed doubt about your business future and you're really looking to your investors/suppliers/bank to keep the faith in the current climate.
