  • What alternatives to a pompino frame to replace my snaped commuter?

    Riding home and my commuter snapped. Looking for a cheap replacement frame. Asap. Anything else other than a pompino I should be looking at?

    Requirements:
    Frame + fork (old bike was 1″ threaded)
    Fixedwheel compatible.
    Room for 32mm + guards. (Currently running 28 mm + guards as that is all I have room for but would like to go up a size a route is old rail line)
    Cheap!

    Old frame was 58cm traditional geometry. I’m a smidge off 6’2″ so right in between the L/XL on the size guide for a pompino.

    Nothing i could think of was cheap.

    In terms of ss cx frames there is not much and what there is is niche so expensive. Most commutet bikes are more mtb flat bar geometry.

    Surly straggler or an All City nature boy would fit the bill, although more expensive than a pompino.

    How did you manage that?

    And may I suggest another Pompino? Can’t think of a nicer handling bike in that price range.

    I don’t think it was a Pompino that snapped was it? Just that a pomp is the obvious replacement and the OP is asking what else?

    It’s not a pomp that snapped it an old kugged frame that has snapped. Sorry for the confusion! I sure hope they are built proof. I seem to have a habit of killing commuter frames.

    Any advice on the sizing being as I apear to be on the cusp size wise? Willa L result k needing a mega long stem?

    mate has a genesis day one. looks like a really nice bike under all the crap he leaves all over it.
    i had a pomp. could never get it to feel right, it was heavy and not very comfortable. i’m sure they work for some people.
    surly crosscheck i have is nice, or the straggler if you want discs ( why not on a commuter? ), they’re not budget items, but i don’t think unreasonable.

    Nothing against discs but it would mean a new bike rather than just replace frame. I would personally also have commuting as my lowest need for discs.

    Specialized do the Tricross single which would accept most of the kit off the pompino.Not sure if they still make them but you might find one second hand.
    The pompino is 120mm on the rear hub as well isn’t it which reduces options even more without buying new wheels.
    Probably best to get another pompino!

    I think XL on the pomp – I’m 6′ on a large and it’s right, but feel closer to XL then M.

    Can’t see how I could improve on the pomp for commuting. I guess we always get bored of stuff eventually and make changes, but it’s just a perfect bike for me riding to work.

    I took a look at the geometry and went up a size. Also fitted the fattest tyres I could get in. I’d happily do a 100 miles on it. (It’s been a while since I’ve used it because I prefer to ride offroad – must drag it out)

    I bought my Pomp as a hack. I have much “nicer” bikes, but was surprised at just how good the Pompino was. It is unbeatable value for money IMO. A more supple front fork would be nice, but I suspect that would remove some of the solid braking feel.

    The 120mm rear means you can use a 3 speed hub which is just the job for maintenance free commuting.

    Seems like a pomp is the choice. Moving I to the 21st century for the. Commuter! Expensivee month. Gulp.

    I had a Pompino and it snapped. I think I kill SS stuff though, in the preceding 3 months I’d snapped a BB and a crank arm too. It snapped in exactly the same place as my inbred SS did shortly after I sold it to a friend too.

    I think it was about 7 years old, probably 15 or 20k miles on it. For the price it’s still fairly economical (though I decided to replace with a geared bike based on the amount of stuff I was snapping – including stem bolts just under a year prior to the frame cracking).

    I’ve got an ss Marin Hamilton Frameset size 16 for sale – it was a great commuter – comes with a set of avid SD7 V’s with xtr cables ..

    i was at the lower end of the size i had. specialised langster in donkey poo brown was lighter and more comfortable for me, with 23s on it.
    guess i’m just a contrarian.
    be a boring world if we all liked the same.
