See I saw that and thought its great, I love public art like that, really brightens the place up and improves the living environment, well done London……

……then I realised it was in Rio De Janeiro, so bollards to London.

What’s the reason for the massive increase in bollard numbers ?

I work above Cannon St station which has been redeveloped of late and the amount of bollards they have put around the front of the building is staggering. At Liverpool St, also, new bollards have been put in place in the most unlikely of place (up the little flight of steps infront of McD’s)

And have you seen the bases of those things? They are like icebergs only a third is on top with the massive metal bases all interlockering with the one closest to it.

So what are they meant to stop? Car bomb? Tank? Wild herd of upset commuters?

I guess it following the failed car bombing at Glasgow airport a couple of years back. If they are done right they can look quite ornate without being particularly obtrusive to the built environment, and have the bonus of stopping cars parking on pedestrian areas. They are a better option than barriers.

a lot of urban hard landscaping in London now is based around security measures. You should see what the planters in front of the US embassy are actually made out of – no old beer barrels cut in half and filled with primroses I can tell you!

Also the stone low wall down the length of Whitehall is a thin stone facade over massive steel substructures.

In front of cannon street Its probably a combination of security and restricting unloading. They dont look pretty though I agree.

cant we have bollards betwixt us cyclists and the nasty motor vehicles?
