  • Welding car exhaust. Anything to be aware of?

MIL appeared at our house yesterday with the rear exhaust box on her Peugeot 107 hanging at a jaunty angle.

The hanger rear hanger in it has snapped. Rusty.

So, going to take it round to local fabricator to see if he can do a quick fix.

However, anything that should be done in terms of disconnecting battery, etc before welding?

A new rear box does not cost much but I’d like to give her her freedom back asap.

    Thanks.

It would be quicker and more reliable to nip into euro car parts or auto save and pick up a new backbox.

Youll probably find a fabricator wants it removed anyway to weld it- if indeed it’s not broke off because the backbox is rottedout

You are right. TBH it’s a ditty little exhaust with nothing too complicated in terms of hardware.

Let’s see what those 2 can offer.

    Thanks.

Might be worth pricing up replacement as welding rust is a bit of an art and its still a rusty exhuast but with a spot of weld on it !!! No one likes welding rust. You should be able to get one next day from local motor factors.
Or get a jubile clip/bit of wire or the like and bodge it up for now.

Bit of coat hanger twisted up will hold it up out the way securely

Have at a pinch done similar with bunji cords – zip ties ,string, bits of fence wire liberated from an already destroyed fence to limp vehicles home

Local tyre and exhaust place will supply and fit a one on Monday for £10 more than I can buy the parts for.

Wire and heavy duty tie-wraps will now be deployed.

    Job done.

    Thanks.

Our volvo has a stainless exhaust as standard but the rear silencer hanger fails, volvo sell a replacement bolt on hanger.
