More than one of the large franchises used to have a dedicated carriage for upgrades which was separate from the people who bought first tickets.

I feel the same about weekend motorway drivers.

If you take a picnic and a paper then you’ve missed the point of first class. Busy First class is worse than quiet second class.

the point of First Class is free food and drink (as well as exclusivity), maybe some nice hot food – you don’t get that with weekend upgrades.

You don’t get hot food at weekends full stop. Yesterday morning I got a pain au chocolat that was as small as a teaspoon and a yogurt. The day before I had a choice of tikka pie, pasta arabiata and a selection of (as many as you could eat) sandwiches/crisps.

Yep weekend first or creche as it’s also known….
