  • "Wedges" for cycling shoes..any advice?

My right knee is foo…really rather knackered. I know that it sticks out when riding, and whilst on the turbo trainer (building back up after a knee op) I noticed that if I suck my knee in, to bring into line, if you know what I mean that there is a gap between the outside of my shoe and the pedal. Sounds like an cycle orthotic/wedge may help.

Am I right in thinking that a road-bike shop may be more help. Any ideas for somewhere near the NW?

I’d be tempted to try and seek out a sports physic that has expertise in cycling. They’ll be more intuned to what you’ve had done and how best to correct it.

Specialized BG soles come with wedges and BG qualified shops (not every Spesh dealer) should be able to assess your body and recommend the right sole wedge/number of wedges
BUT your case might be a little more delicate (knee op etc.) so you might want to see a proper ortho specialist

If you don’t know one company’s like these might be able to help and/or name a specialist:

I had mine set up by a chap called mike veal at bikedynamic. Really helped a lot. Worth the trip and the money.

I’d be going for medical or physio not bike shop.

Given the problems you have described, I’d advise seeking medical advice to ascertain if there is an underlying medical issue before trying corrective orthotic action.

specialized BG insoles and wedges or if you don’t have room in your shoes then a cleat wedge.
i use sidas custom insoles with a BG wedge and cleat wedge (from sigma sport in Kingston)
BG are very good, sidas are custom but more ££’s

Wedges in shoes/cleats only pander to the problem, and in will only create more serious issues later on, they don’t help correct or fix issues at all. See a good sports physio. Wedges in shoes shudder at the stupidity!

It was a physio who referee me to a podiatrist who sorted me for running and walking but suggested a specialist for cycling. I’d love to not have to spend the rest of my life in orthotics if anyone can tell me how.

As some of the other posts have commented you need to see a physio first. I’ve heard good things about Adrian Timms at Cadence Sport,I’m going there for a fitting & wedges next month, here’s a link

they sorted my knee misstracking/weak glute medius/outside knee pain/overdeveloped vastis lateralis. diagnosed by a physio and remedied by a trained bike fitter and some custom insoles and wedges.

it would be “stupidity” for me not to use them, the best couple of hundred pounds i have ever spent on cycling because without them there would be no cycling for me.

If you want a decent cycling physio who can set up your position you need Nick Dinsdale at NJD Sports Clinic in Clitheroe, 01200 427457. He’s very experienced and will sort your knee problem.

I was also going to recommend NJD Clinic in clitheroe.

Thanks for the interesting thoughts and varied suggestions. Got a fantastic but not cycling specific physio. TheDoctor and MrSmith confuse things… 😉
