  • Website / App for planning USA / Canada rides for a Garmin 1000?

I’ve not really messed around with Basecamp much, but suspect the mapping isnt good enough. Any suggestions for planning routes (as opposed to downloading GPX files) for a Garmin 1000? I’ll need something better than Google Map or Google Earth, not sure if there is a decent open source map of North America?

I realise Trailforks and MTB Project have loads of trails that can be downloaded, this is more for making up my own routes.

The paid version of DynamicWatch might do the trick? – https://dynamic.watch/plan#

I always recommend RdeWithGPS for planning. If you’re asking about getting maps on the device then it’s easy enough via http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl Just Google for instructions, DC Rainmaker has an easily understandable page on it.

Thanks, I’ll take a look. My Edge has open source bike maps on it (and I’ve used that Rainmaker guide for Swiss and other topo maps).

Wow – excellent site. Good topo maps for the USA.

Seems so much better than Basecamp – now if only Garmin would create some functionality to load GPX routes onto their units using Garmin Conect + wifi or bluetooth…

To be honest I’m not sure why anyone would use Basecamp these days. I’ve only used it for testing custom TYP files to restyle maps. Easiest way to get files onto there is to copy them either via a USB cable or onto the SD card, IME.
