congrats! i broke my ankle last year and followed your thread with interest and a certain smugness…(you seemed awfully calm having being threatened with amputation!)

i bet the oh is keeping a tight reign on your movements!

Great news! Hope all goes well.
Back in 97 broke my ankle in 3 places while biking. General consensus was to fuse as considered too badly damaged to repair, but saved at eleventh hour by young whizz kid surgeon who agreed to have a go. Lots of metalwork, physio etc and 15 years on still works a treat. Lost about 10 deg. forward flex and aches a bit but very grateful that young surgeon was on duty at the right time.

Great news, however not wanting to sound too negative… but I would be a bit worried about so many conflicting treatment plans!

Not to worry anyone, but I have heard of consultants who will not do an op, because they dont have the relevant skills, and will do inferior (less complicated ops) or not operate at all which means the patient doesnt get the best outcome.

I guess if they were considering chopping your leg off you must have been in a main teaching hospital, so in theory the better surgeons anyhow.

Funckydunc – not negative, sensible. The Dr who did the initial op was a knee specialist but was very happy with the outcome. Admitted that he wasn’t sure how to proceed so recommended an ankle specialist. I also saw a second ankle specialist. One was NHS and one private.

The two ankle specialists actually agreed!!!

How could they all have got it so wrong?

It’s cos medicine is a very inexact business – everyone behaves very differently. Give the docs some credit.

And yes, please stay the *** away from ladders. STW can’t take any more of this.

    Great news!
Now, please, try to effect no more significant damage upon yourself. Go on, try, if only for 6 months 🙂

They didn’t really though did they as WCA explained, they said it could lead to amputation but operated. The ankle speacilists were fine with this and now he’s on the road to recovery.

….. or don’t want to risk an op not having a good outcome thus affecting their reputation.
This is from two consultants I know both of whom DO carry out the tricky stuff.

    Great news WCA.

And I would rather a Dr outlined the worst case scenario, as any other outcome is a win.

I might be a pessimist, but that means I regularly have pleasant surprises 😉

Fabulous news WCA! Hope the physio goes well, sure you’ll be back to your best in no time! 😀

The way you’ve stayed so positive throughout (at least when you’ve posted on here) is a real inspiration. Proves we should never give up hope either!

    Great news!

What I found with my hip was that my consultant always wanted to give me the absolute worst case scenario in advance. Which is fair enough, because if he’d given me the best or mid scenarios then it’d gone worse I’d have been pretty displeased whereas beating the worst case feels good. It’s only really a problem if they insist on sticking with the pessimist’s course of action. Or if you top yourself or self-amputate in the shed or something 😉

Just looked through the pictures and my break seems like a a nettle sting on a summer ride on dry dusty trails.
Pleased to hear things are looking up.
