Have any of you guys been on them and thought that they were actually well delivered and useful? I’ve been asked to find and go on one but am worried it will just be bullsh*t bingo.
If on the other hand, if you can recommend a good training company that actually deliver quality courses that are helpful in the transition from a technical role to managing a team then I’m all ears.

Thanks but I’d like to hear opinions from people who’ve been on the training courses.

I went on a series of them through work a few years back and they were very good. It really just depends. I know of other courses that were rubbish.

I was once the same position as you, and best one I did was a course where you learnt the difference between ‘Management’ and ‘Leadership’ – if you see one like that, go.

Training courses always seem to follow the same format:

Introduction from host.

Get everyone to introduce themselves.

Go to flip chart and ask asinine questions and eventually force someone to say something like “Motivation?”.

Get into groups to list seven different types of “Communication”.
Present answers to everyone.

Repeat format for several hours/days.

Unutterably tedious waste of time IMO.

Will they help ringfence the unicorns?

One of the best ones I did was on NLP.

I know there are naysayers out there, but even so, it does make you think and do things a little bit differently.

Try QA – they have a massive range of courses and I’ve found them to be very effective – both from my own point of view, and from watching the impact they have had on others.

The best training I’ve ever had have came from 3 courses

The first was how to organise myself, time wise and how best to document what I need. The second was disciplinary procedure, so you get it right. The 3rd was what would happen if I ever found myself in coroners court.

None of the this is how you motivate someone training has been any good.

I’ve been on a few, lots of one-day in-house when I worked for a big company, then a development programme which was the same group of people who met regularly to work through modules and a project.

Some stick in my mind as useful. One on “dealing with difficult people and giving feedback constructively” was a total goldmine, I still employ the advice. Thats the stuff you need to learn.

Another one where we had to pretend we were all stuck in the desert after a plane crash etc was fun but in the end I thought pointless. I mean, I wouldn’t really kill everyone and eat them.

Anyway, sounds like you need a clearer idea of what you want to achieve ??
