recently decorated and in the first room we noticed the seams started to open up when the paper dried… put it down to cheapish paper from wikinsons…

next room, expensive paper and it’s done it again.. we got four more rooms to paper and we think it’s because we have a new build house (that’s 5 years old) and they don’t skim the walls no more then it’s sucking the paper and shrinking it.

It doesn’t look like we can overlap so what do we do? Is there some prep we are missing??

You could always Uni-bond the walls before hand, it will seal the surface. Failing that, use backing paper (this goes on horizontaly), then paper over.

You need to size the walls with diluted wallpaper paste first. It stops the moisture being drawn our of the adhesive too quickly. It should tell you correct ratios on the back of the paste packet. Might be under papering onto fresh plaster or alike.

If no instructions you basically need to make a fairly small batch of paste up that is more like water than paste and apply over all the area to be papered. You could do it a couple of time perhaps the day before you paper. Do not use PVC or alike.

Watered down PVA adhesive will also seal the walls.

Size it. If you want to paper the same day use the thin paste method but if you’re not in a rush, better to size with thinned pva the day before so its dry. Oh, and use decent quality paste

All the above, and make sure you are not stretching the wallpaper at the seams, if you stretch it too much when joining, it tends to shrink back a little when drying, if you know what I mean,
