So im getting to the point that the constantly wet wall in our bedroom is drying and the missus wants it decorating. Its an old wall and id like to walpaper it as its easy and doesnt require filling the wall etc. She wants it painting.

Sooo, are these smooth over paints any good? any other alternatives? Im lothed to line it with lining paper as it never looks as good imo.

    Skim it.

Its fairly easy. Watch a couple of youtube videos.

Or pay someone. Its not that expensive and doesn’t take long.

No it isn’t. Doing it badly is easy.

and doesnt require filling the wall etc.

I wouldn’t be re-decorating a still damp wall. Wait for it to fully dry out first.

got a near perfect finish last time. its easy. Painting i find less so.

I’ve used some wall skim product that you put on with a wide flexible trowel then sand down. It worked very well but it isn’t the stuff sold as skim, it’s more like a ready mix quick set plasterboard adhesive (somebody will be along to tell you what it is).

Mrs BigJohn uses lining paper and it’s more than acceptable.
