Right – I have very little experience of what's available in terms of handheld walking / cycling GPS units so please come back at me in a simplistic fashion…

We're looking at spending some time doing day walks in Southern Spain this winter and wanted to consider GPS as an addition to the walking maps. The GPS systems that I've seen (as opposed to built in things on the iPhone for example) have been the mono colour Garmin ones with what seems like turn-based instructions. I'd prefer one that has actual maps on it, that could have waypoints added beforehand for a particular route.

    I've got two main questions:

1: Do such things exist, and if so, what can people recommend?
2: Is it possible to get maps for that area – to download / upload?

Sorry it's all a bit basic, and I know I could just google it, but I don't really know what to ask, and I'd appreciate real world advice if people have the time. Thanks in advance.
