  • Wales – self catering ideas?

Planning on a Wales summer holiday next year, looking for a 2 bedroom self catering place. Haven’t been to Wales since I was 6 and would like to be based in Snowdonia National Park, but have no idea where to base ourselves. Obviously somewhere near a trail centre, with family trails(have a 5 year old boy) would be great and also not a big driving distance to the coast or a town, I know it’s a big area, but would anybody have any recommendations?

    Cheers

Can’t recommend anywhere particular but Sykes cottages have a very good selection in North Wales.

I’ve booked 10 of us for a weekend here. We’ve not stayed before but it has been recommended. They can do fully catered or self catered.

We’ve been here for the last two years:

Awesome place up in the foothills of Cadair, really lovely spot. They have other digs down nearer Dolgellau too.
Ten minute drive to C-y-B, twenty to Barmouth – or a nice easy pedal along the estuary to Barmouth for ice cream and sand castles (prob too far for a 5 year old but ideal for trailer or tag along).

We always stay in Capel Curig. 3x good food pubs and a good cafe/restaurant and another good shop/cafe.

Central location for Snowdonia. Easy off-road cycle/walk to Plas Y Benin where you can use the skills area for free (if available, do need to sign a disclaimer and get a member card). PYB has a great sunset view of Snowden from the bar.

There are forest paths almost from the door and you can ride to the Marin and Penmachno (don’t go to the start. Look at a map and it’s not far to do get to either half way round). CYB and Antur are less than a 45 min drive. Llandegla is also about 45min. Snowdon is about 10 mins to the Pen Y Pass car park. You can also pick up the Sarn Helen trail which I really liked.

There are a few cottages. We have stayed at most of them. We would recommend

As our favourite however we have tried to stay at

But it’s always booked by the time we get our act together.

Have stayed here before, just down the road from CyB. Range of sizes/options of cabins.

If it’s still going, try Cynfal Farm cottages. Sheep farm on the edge of Tywyn, has its own halt on the Tallylyn steam railway, not far to trail centres, CAT at Machynllth which our kids loved.

Trawsfynydd Holiday Village has self catering log cabins available just 2 miles up the road from Coed y Brenin. http://www.logcabinswales.co.uk If you fancy trying more than just CyB there are other trail centres within 30 minutes drive: Antur Stiniog, the Marin Trail (Gwydir Mawr), Penmachno Trails and the Mach trails.
Plenty of other family friendly cycling options nearby too: http://www.logcabinswales.co.uk/things-to-do/cycling-in-snowdonia

Porthmadog, Dolgellau and the sandy beaches from Barmouth up to Criccieth are all about 30 minutes drive away.
    Hope that helps 🙂
